Beauty Awards 2014

I decided to do this a little bit like essiebutton did her 2014 best of: use the things that just popped into my head without digging around. If I don’t remember it, it can’t have been that good and now LET’S GO!

Skincare:

My year focussed a lot on skincare, for one I discovered Caroline Hirons and secondly I am just over having problem skin. What I learned the hard way this year is that it actually wasn’t the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo that sorted out my skin when it was at it’s best but the bebe young care line.  Ever since that realization I have come up with a skincare routine that works for me and even holds my hormonal break outs to a minimum.

Cleansers:
bebe young care cleansing lotion+toner (very emollient, almost turns into an oil on my skin, gets everything off and hydrates)
Neutrogena Anti Blackhead scrub (physical scrub, salycylic acid, one of my all time staples)

Toner:
bebe young care toner (quite harsh and heavy on both alcohol and acid, my skin loves it though and I love the burning sensation when it bites into active break outs)

Serum step:
Rival de Loop hydrating gel with hyaluronic acid
(I thought this broke me out, it didn’t. Now in the winter it is not moisturizing enough on its own and it does get a little tacky for a moment, but when I layer my moisturizers on it’s perfect)

Moisturizers:
Rival de Loop hydrating gel cream for eyes (better than the Chanel sample I used for a couple of months)
Garnier 24h moisturizer anti blemishes  (has a slightly powdery finish, is really light on the skin, contains salycylic acid and sits nicely under make up)
Diadermine  Lift intense + SPF 30 (especially in the summer and on sunny days)N
Diadermine Lift intense + Nutritive Night (best night cream I tried so far because it doesn’t leave any residue and sinks in quickly but hydrates and repairs virtually just as well as other nightcreams I tried so far)

Wipes:
bebe young care cleansing wipes for dry and sensitive skin (I use those in a pinch or when I don’t have make up on and need a quick refresh. It was these wipes though that made me realize that it was actually whatever component it is that is in the bebe young care line that cleans up my white bumps)

Lipcare:
After weeks of having a dry patch on my top lip that just wouldn’t go away and nothing helped I used the brand again that I was certain would not help but it did. My lips are back to normal now , though and I am back to not needing any lip balms all thanks to my ancient Labello Gold and Labello Hydro Care. Everything else may well go to the trash.

You will notice that all of this is drugstore. I simply don’t have the budget to fork out on expensive brands, plus this routine works really well for me, at this point I see no need to change anything.

Decorative Cosmetics:

Photo 06-01-2015 14 45 58

Base:
The two bases that stood out to me this year were my MAC Face and Body in C1 (still can’t get over how awesome my skin looks in the pics that I took when I wore it) and Max Factor Facefinity in 40 Fresh Ivory. The Facefinity is a special favorite because it makes my skin look incredible and lasts forever. I even wear it to work and despite physical exertion it does not budge. Plus the color is a perfect match. If I could only wear two foundations for the rest of my life it would be those two.

Eyeshadowbase:
After the desaster of the essence I ❤ stage base I was glad I got the Urban Decay Primer Potion samples with my Naked 2 palette. So far I have only used Eden and at this point I would totally shell out the 20€ to get the full size once I have used up the samples. I have been using it since August and there is still a lot left. It is light enough for me and I love the coverage it gives in my eyelids plus it really makes my shadows last between 8 and 10 hrs.

Brows:
This year was a brow year and I am not done yet. My new finds were the Catrice brow wax and the tinted brow filler. If I really want my brows to be extremely polished I go for wax, then powder then filler. Normally I use either wax or filler with the Catrice brow powder. I also moved on to fill in the front of my brows with the lighter and the tail with the darker color of the powder duo. I found a shape I like, I trim rather than pluck and my brows are so much fuller and nicer since I started doing that. For 2015 I want to find a place in town to get my brows threaded or waxed because at this point I am struggeling with removing the fuzz over and under my brow and I want to try either the Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade or the MAC Liquidline for brows (IF i can still find that anywhere)

Eyeshadows:
With the arrival of Jaclyn Hill and Casey Holmes in my life I completely revamped the way I do my eye make up. Generally I have been gravitating towards neutral eyes this year and my Urban Decay Naked 2 palette as well as the Sleek Au Naturel palette. The top row of the Sleek palette has incredible transition/crease shades and I don’t think I have to say anything about the Naked 2 anymore. All has been said. It’s perfect.
The single shadows that blew me out of the water this year are both from Catrice. There was Shade of Grey from the Lala Berlin collection, which looks like a metallic shadow in the pan on the lid however it has the most incredible matte but lit from within/softly shimmery finish. I have never seen anything like this before and it is perfect to me. The other one is Go Charlie Brown from the regular range, which is the perfect matte medium brown for the crease.

Eyeliner:
I am a liquid liner gal and the Manhattan Eyemazing liner has been with me for most of the year. I just feel naked without my liner. The Eyemazing liner is really good for a pen and lasted really long without drying in or the tip going blunt. However, I am currently trying another one though, which seems to blow the Eyemazing liner out of the water. We’ll see.
I rarely ever use liner on my lower waterline anymore, especially not black. It just doesn’t work for me anymore unless I am doing a heavy duty smoky eye. At best it looks like trying too hard at worst it looks completely inappropriate.

Mascara:
My realization of the year is that I am a L’Oréal mascara girl. My favorite is the Miss Manga mascara and I can’t wait to try the Black Angel variety once I have used up my other mascaras. My second favorite this year was the original Volume Million Lashes. Aside from the Catrice Doll Eyes Waterproof I think I have sworn off other mascaras for good. L’Oréal or bust.

Setting Powder:
essence All about matt. Best one I have tried so far. I still have the loose version in my back up drawer (which is gonna last me forever). It’s translucent, finely milled and does what it says on the tin.

Blush:
Because of my freckles there is a lot going on on my skin as is, so overly shimmery blushes are per se not such a good idea for me. For most of the year I stuck with the utterly fantastic MAC Perfect Cheek blush which is indeed perfect: A neutral light pink almost a bit grey which turns into the lightest most natural flush on my fair skin. Towards the end of the year another favorite came in the Catrice Floral OrnARTment blush from the Viennart collection which is a matte light peach with deep reddish elements. The reddish elements I try to avoid for everyday blush because they can come out a little strong against my skin. A shimmery one that I loved was the Hello Autumn color changing blush by essence. The shimmer in this one is light and fine enough for me to get away with it.

Bronzer:
My two bronzers of the year are my MAC Aphrodite’s Shell which is my perfect bronzer, considering how light and sheer it is. It gives me the perfect sunkissed color. The other one is the Catrice Metallure Bronzer. With a light hand I can avoid shimmery desasters and instead get a soft glowy flush.

Haircare:
The only thing that stood out to me this year was the Garnier Natural Beauty Cranberry and Argan Oil conditioner. It smells amazing and does the perfect job at keeping my hair healthy, shiny and soft. I think I’m on my second or third bottle right now.

And that’s a wrap on the Beauty Awards 2014. No lip products? No lip products! While there were a couple of nice ones there were none that really stood out to me enough that I wore them more than a couple of times.
I am thinking about doing a Life Awards 2014 next. We’ll see how that goes.

Haul and First Impressions: MAC Face and Body and more…

Photo 21-05-2014 13 41 10I hinted at it in my recent Sunday Round Ups but yeah, I have put two hellish months behind me and it seems I did well. Off I went to treat myself. Initially I didn’t want to splurge but that 10% off- Douglas Card offer vaulted me over the edge (that and the packaging for the Alluring Aquatics by MAC, I mean, O. M. G. … !!!)

I actually went in to get matched for the MAC Face and Body foundation. Recently my skin has been really great and I was craving a lightweight sheer foundation to get me over the summer and I knew MAC F&B would deliver and on top I knew from reviews that it also lasts very well on the skin. If that doesn’t scream summer I don’t know what does!
I got matched to C1, which is the lightest of the bunch. The Maccine tried N2 and N1 on me, but N2 was too dark and N1 came out too dark and yellow as well (weirdly enough). C1 pretty much hit the nail on the head, though. Generally I have to say I had a great experience at our MAC counter today, she even took me outside so I could look at my face in daylight and she was very nice and helpful.

And then Alluring Aquatic happened. I am a little upset that I didn’t get a lipstick anymore because they were all sold out already but I just HAD to get one thing from the collection because the packaging is the most stunning I have ever seen. Ever. I might actually go back tomorrow and pick one of the nailpolishes up as well (naughty). I was torn between one of the Extra Dimension blushes and one of the Extra Dimension bronzers and after my lovely Maccine swatched both on me I fell for the bronzer. Hard. So in the end and enabled by the 10% off I took it home with me.

Look at the packaging with the droplets on it. Look. At. It. Oooooh!

And here’s to the first impressions:

Photo 21-05-2014 13 47 30

Naked Face

In this picture you can see my bare skin. It is very hot over here today and I am very hormonal, so please do excuse the spots and the redness. I primed my skin by applying the Rival de Loop Hydro Moisturizing Gel, which I also hauled today. I used it underneath my Diadermine day cream because my skin was a bit sore after being cleansed three times in less than 6 hours (morning cleanse, cleansing wipe at MAC and taking the dirt of the city off before applying the new foundation -.-). The gel contains panthenol and duo-hyaluron and it soothed my skin immediately. It is very lightweight and sank in very quickly but it still felt really moisturizing. It also seemed to let my skin absorb my moisturizer better and quicker, I really enjoy it so far.
I also tried the soothing eye cream from the same range because I ran out of my Chanel Hydra Beauty eye gel- sample and I actually think I like the RdL eye cream better. It is even more moisturizing and a little creamier then the Chanel gel (it’s still a gel/cream formula just like the Chanel, though).

Just Face and Body

You can actually see how the foundation calmed down the redness and evened out my skintone already. I buffed the foundation on with a flat top synthetic kabuki brush. F&B is waterbased, which means it is very liquidy when it comes out of the bottle, but it sets very quickly. It even feels a little bit sticky for a second or two, but really for just that long. On its own the foundation has a very glowy finish without being oily or moving around a lot and it is pretty much undetectable on the skin. It melted into my skin and set and it hasn’t budged until now, despite the hot sultry weather we have today. Granted at this point I only had it on for about 5 hours but I also ran around in the heat already and got sweaty and everything is still in place.

Face and Body and concealer

Face and Body and concealer

I used the Rimmel Match Perfection concealer under my eyes and around my nose and the Catrice Camouflage on any spots (both in 010 Ivory). The concealers melted very nicely into the foundation. Another major point pro Face and Body: I suffer from enlarged pores mainly on my nose (ick-factor right there, sorry) and the F&B blurrs over the pores without sitting in them or otherwise highlighting them. That was my major concern, that it wouldn’t cover my pores well enough but it did.

F&B, concealer, powder

F&B, concealer, powder

I lightly powdered with my essence all about matt powder and a duofiber stipling brush. It didn’t stay matte for long, BUT I also didn’t get overly oily. The foundation just went back to being glowy and skin-like.

Photo 21-05-2014 14 08 42

And here is the final look with MAC Alluring Aquatic Extra Dimension Bronzer Aphrodite’s Shell on my cheeks, Max Factor Masterpiece Glide On Liner in black/brown in a half-line and L’Oréal Miss Manga in black on my lashes. I filled in my brows with the Catrice Brow Set.

Aphrodite’s Shell only got a C on Temptalia but mainly because it is such a sheer veil and won’t show up on medium to darker complexions, but on me as the extremely fair dainty doll that I am this bronzer is borderline perfect. It gives me a wash of sunkissed color, melts into my skin and gives almost like a soft focus effect. It doesn’t show up very well on pictures, though. In reality I have this very soft bronzey glow on my cheeks, but my camera won’t cooperate. It looks like I have some splotch of brown color on my cheek, oh well….

To sum this up I am in love with all of my purchases today! It seems I had the Midas touch with all of the things I bought. Keep in mind that this is a first impression not a proper review and a bit of a rave at that. I will keep on wearing everything and see what happens. So far no MAC foundation has broken me out and I sincerely hope it stays that way, same goes for the skin care.
If you are looking for a review of that green polish check back on sisterhoodofthetravellingnailpolish.wordpress.com in the next couple of days, I will get one up there soon.

Do you have any experience with MAC F&B or MAC in general? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Read y’all on Sunday, have a good one 🙂

Confessions of a Mascara Addict #2: L’Oréal, Manhattan, Catrice and Max Factor

Finally I got around to photograph the second installment of Confessions of a Mascara Addict. I put 6 new mascaras to the test and here are the results:

Photo 05-04-2014 16 50 13

Naked Eyes

My lashes are naturally rather straight and stubborn and a little sparse towards the corners. I am looking for a mascara that really holds a curl and emphasizes my corner lashes, makes my lashes in general really black, long and thick.

1. L’Oréal Volume Million Lashes

Photo 05-04-2014 16 37 02

Black, rubber brush, gold packaging;  this is almost a classic. I like it a lot. It holds a curl, volumizes and seperate the lashes. You can see one coat, in fact all of the pictures show one coat on my lashes. The wand is a really hard rubber brush that kind of stings when it touches the sensitive upper waterline  and the formula is perceptibly scented. The wand is a weird stumpy shape and really thick, all of those things aside though, it gives a nice result.

2. L’Oréal Miss Manga Mega Volume

Photo 05-04-2014 16 36 23

This one I am really impressed with. Super black, holds a curl and gives length and volume. It builds up really nicely. A couple of days ago I just wore two coats of this, some blush and natural lipstick and my lashes were really prominent on my face. Really thick and long and black without being clumpy. This mascara seems to have been received really controversely, some people love it, some people hate it, I count myself safely in the group of people who loves this mascara. The wand has normal bristles, is really big and flexible, it is cut in a conical shape with a sort of wave-profile along the outline. The thicker end really helps to catch the outer lashes.

3.Manhattan Ultimate Long & Curl

Photo 05-04-2014 16 37 44

I used to wear a previous version of this when I was maybe 14 or 15 and fell back in love when I picked this up when it was in offer. The formula seems to have fibres in it, which I quite like but  I know some people don’t. It makes my lashes really thick and long, doesn’t hold the curl that well but it is still pretty great. With this you have to be a bit careful that it doesn’t clump up, but I think as love as you don’t layer coat over coat on, you should be fine. This has a garden-variety mascara wand with normal bristles, if anything it is a little shorter than other brushes.

4. Manhattan X-treme Last WP

Photo 05-04-2014 16 38 13

This gives a very natural result and if you like that, this mascara is your thing. I prefer a little more oomph to my lashes so this is not really my thing. Aside from that it is not a bad product at all. The brush is long, slim and has normal bristles. It tints the lashes nice and black, holds a curl but doesn’t really volumize or lengthen.

5. Max Factor Clump Defy WP/ Covergirl Clump Crusher WP

Photo 05-04-2014 16 49 32

This is another one with a very natural result. Thankfully I got that 30% off or I would be really upset  about spending a lot of money on a mascara that I won’t wear or at least won’t wear much. This one really separates the lashes it holds the curl but the lengthening powers are not that great and it is not really volumizing. It has a slightly curved rubber brush, which generally I like but the formula just doesn’t do for me.  I am a little disappointed with this. Again, not a bad product, just not enough oomph for me.

6. Catrice Glamour Doll WP

Photo 05-04-2014 16 48 41

Out of the mascaras shown here this is by far my favorite. It lengthens, volumizes, separates and holds the curl until I take it off in the evening. I may have found a holy grail mascara here, plus at 4,45€ this is VERY affordable. I really like the slim long rubber brush, too. It allows me to apply the mascara without smudging it all over my eyelid.

Round up:

None of these mascaras irritated or stung my eyes, they are all easily removable with my bebe young care quick&clean cleansing lotion for sensitive skin. The ones that are on power rotation right now are the Glamour Doll and because I try not to use WP mascaras all the time not to dry out my lashes too much I switch it out with the Miss Manga on a regular basis.

If you still like to see some more mascara mini reviews you can read the first confessions chapter here.

Sunday Round Up #17

(picture to come)

Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen!

How was your week? Mine was fine. There was more studying and working and a lot less party than last week, but not every week can be this exceptional, right? So what DID I do?

1. More cooking, baking and cleaning
I baked marble cake this week. Not exactly low carb but soo good. Also I made my first ‘Grüne Soße’. I felt like a proper Hessian woman when I succeeded. ‘Grüne Soße’ (direct translation green sauce) is a southern hessian specialty. It’s basically 7 specific herbs mashed up with some quark, mayonnaise, salt and pepper. Much like potato salad every family has their specific recipe here. We usually eat this with potatoes and it is traditionally a dish for the thursday before easter. I know easter is still a couple of weeks away but I wanted to see if I can get the sauce done, should my mom not be able to make it herself. We took some to the hospital and my mom said it was fine, so I guess I am good to go.
I also gave the kitchen fridge a good deep clean, the basement fridge is next.

2. Pamper saturday
I think I am dealing with a bit of a cold (or a severe allergic reaction, not sure). And after cooking, cleaning and baking on saturday as well as visiting my mom, I decided to run a bath (bright red and poppy scented), listen to some Dance with Dragons audio book and do a de-stress face mask. Man, that was nice. Now the last week of writing my linguistics paper can come.

3. Weirdo make up
Do you ever go through phases where none of your foundations look good on your skin? Seriously, either they are too dark, too glowy, too matte, too heavy, too light. Major nuisance. And the weirdest thing is my skin itself is pretty healthy and clear at the moment. And what is weirder: I don’t like my eye make ups either. God alone knows what’s wrong with me. What I do love though is my L’Oréal Miss Manga Mega Volume mascara. Makes my lashes super long, thick AND holds a curl. Amazing.

4. Pig skin withdrawels
I miss football. There I said it. I miss watching it, I miss staring at my play-by-stream, praying it won’t give out, because it is my only way to keep track of what my Pats are doing, checking back on the live blog, because I need Fred Kirsch to keep me sane, especially when my boys are pulling a massive comeback win, like they liked to do last season. And now that ‘my’ Julian Edelman has re-signed I am so ready for the new season!
Now, the only thing that sort-of helps is Friday Night Lights, a well-loved, critically well-received, dead too soon tv show, set in smalltown- Texas, centering around high school football. It is kind of a quiet tv show focussing both on personal matters, the smaller and bigger tragedies and joys in life and, well, football. It is quiet, yes, but never slow or boring. And Taylor Kitsch et al. are very easy on the eyes. Footballers, eh?!

5. I can’t read.
No, seriously, I can’t. I have started about 6 books, made it 3 pages in put it down to never touch it again. I hate those phases.

6. What else?
Subway to Sally MitGift ad nauseum. SO. GOOD.
AND my Delain Deluxe Edition of the new album will be shipped next friday. Yay.
The new Epica single ‘The Essence of Silence’ is LOUD. And dope.
I still can’t download the Veronica Mars movie from iTunes. I assume we are waiting for the German synchronization (which is already done, because I saw the movie in German at the theater). So eff you, iTunes. Grump.

That was that. Let’s make a tick under this week and move on into the next. May it be productive and happy!

That was about it.

Sunday Round Up #16

Photo 16-03-2014 22 11 10

What a week this was! I don’t even know where to begin, I had so many wonderful things coming my way both material and things that really touched my soul. In a way this Sunday Round Up is a list of things I am grateful for.

My job(s):
At the beginning of the week the boy I tutor basically told me he enjoys working with me, and that makes me so happy! If his exam turns out better than the one before on top of that I will be over the moon! He is a great guy with a great mind but his orthography escapes him sometimes a little bit. It was a bit scary at first but now it seems to work out fine. I sincerely hope it stays that way.
Later this week I returned to one of the stores I helped out at over the summer. That earned me money and a big hug from the one store manager and I got told off semi-seriously for not having heard the other one saying hello to me. It was so nice to come back to people who seem to genuinely like me. I feel really blessed about that.

I’m not telling you that to show off. From all those years of being bullied I am still surprised when people actually like me and accept me the way I am. I am not used to that. And it makes me beyond happy when someone does like me. Just like that.

Veronica Mars:
The Veronica Mars movie came out this thursday in Germany in a limited number of theater across the country. One of those theaters was in my hometown and my fabulous Snowhoney came home from work early to go directly to the theater with me and watch the movie on opening night. I had so much fun. The film was a total marshmallow (Veronica Mars fan)-pleaser. If you know the show, there were so many little things that made it special, but I think it is easy to understand for people who don’t know the series as well. My theater here in Germany was far from being sold out but it was fuller than I expected it to be. In the US the movie made the Box Office Top 10 (despite being released to only a limited number of theaters there as well, way to go US marshmallows!) and was sold out in places. If you like sassy blondes, murder mysteries, high school reunion type movies, great father daughter teams, epic love stories or any combination thereof  I can only urge you from the bottom of my heart to go see the movie, I know you will enjoy it!
I have a bit of a bone to pick with iTunes Germany, though. We were promised a worldwide release for the download version for friday. It seems to have worked everywhere but in Germany. I still can’t download the movie. I met with my best friends on saturday hoping to be able to share the experience of watching the movie with them (again). Imagine how upset I was when I couldn’t. I can only hope that the movie will be released as soon as possible (as there is no indicator by iTunes when it will become available). I really want to watch the movie again and I really want to watch it with my friends. It would make my day if I could get it on monday (hint hint).

Subway to Sally- MitGift:
Another exciting release this week was Subway to Sally’s new album MitGift  (play on the German word for dowry which can also be devided to spell ‘with poison’. German is a weird language sometimes. Or strangely accurate. Who knows.)- Mördergeschichten (murderer stories). The title is rather apt since it is a concept album in which every song is inspired by famous murder cases and old legends (like the cruel sister- legend) I won’t go into detail for every song that would go beyond the scope of this post. Suffice to say that all of the songs are everything that makes Subway to Sally for me only darker and better. Music-wise every single song is headbang-ready with a hardcore baseline, heavy drums and some electronic elements here and there. But the lyrics are still as beautiful as ever and the melodic parts have stolen my heart. Some of them are so gentle and heart wrenching that they seem to be the only thing that keeps the thrumming base and drums at bay,  keep them from swallowing you whole and dragging you down into the darkness. I love this album, not with the usual bright burning excitement, this time it is a dark flame but one that will keep on burning for a very long time. This album comes even closer to my all time favorite Engelskrieger (Angel Warrior) than Schwarz in Schwarz (Black in Black) did two years ago.

Make Up:
This week wasn’t much of a make up week at all. I am still testing mascaras for the next chapter of Confessions of a Mascara Addict. Snowhoney picked up the new L’Oréal Miss Manga Mega Volume mascara for me and it is awesome for a non-waterproof mascara. I also went back to my Catrice All Matt Plus that seemed to break me out last time I wore it. We’ll see if it does it again, or if it was something else.

Books and TV Shows:
In this particular case this week was a bit of a lost week. I started watching Vikings again, but was so distraught and distracted that I couldn’t really enjoy it. I was also too jumpy to read a book. I started to read Sons and Lovers (D.H. Lawrence) again in preparation for my thesis but I gave up after taking over an hour for one page. I just couldn’t concentrate. I will try very hard to do better this week. In fact I will HAVE to do better this week as I have a deadline in about 15 days and I am not nearly as prepared as I should be.

NFL Free Agency:
Wanna know why I was so distraught? Yep, free agency started last tuesday. For non- Americans like me who have not grown up with it: Free agency means that all the football players whose contracts are up at the end of the season are now on the open market and free to negotiate with any team they like and by extension that also means they can sign with any team they like. I understand this is rather exciting for Americans who have grown up with it and are used to going through this every year. Now try to imagine you are a little German girl who goes through this for the first time, has nothing but a basic idea how this works, is really awful with new situations and change and on top of everything her favorite player is out on the open market as well. And about three times it looked like he was coming close to sign with another team than the one she kinda lost her heart to. I just came off of an anxiety episode and my body was all too ready to go back to those patterns. Since tuesday I have slept only a couple of hours at night and whenever my phone went off I jumped. Last night around 8 (German time) finally the relieve came, where tweets popped up saying that finally my team and my fave player had reached an agreement. (I hope to God it is not another one year one. If it is I will have to personally swim to California and kick his ass, I really can’t go through this mess again next year. *welp)

Post Scriptum:
In order to restore my calm I am now re-watching Friday Night Lights and re-reading The Mists of Avalon for the umpteenth time. Any of the Avalon-series books is always great to give me rest and ease my mind.

This was it from me for you about this week. I hope yours was as bright and shiny as mine (the fact that ‘my’ player re-signed really blots out the mess of the FA 😀 ). Now let’s all check off this week and move on in a productive, anxiety-free new one!
