Beauty Awards 2014

I decided to do this a little bit like essiebutton did her 2014 best of: use the things that just popped into my head without digging around. If I don’t remember it, it can’t have been that good and now LET’S GO!

Skincare:

My year focussed a lot on skincare, for one I discovered Caroline Hirons and secondly I am just over having problem skin. What I learned the hard way this year is that it actually wasn’t the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo that sorted out my skin when it was at it’s best but the bebe young care line.  Ever since that realization I have come up with a skincare routine that works for me and even holds my hormonal break outs to a minimum.

Cleansers:
bebe young care cleansing lotion+toner (very emollient, almost turns into an oil on my skin, gets everything off and hydrates)
Neutrogena Anti Blackhead scrub (physical scrub, salycylic acid, one of my all time staples)

Toner:
bebe young care toner (quite harsh and heavy on both alcohol and acid, my skin loves it though and I love the burning sensation when it bites into active break outs)

Serum step:
Rival de Loop hydrating gel with hyaluronic acid
(I thought this broke me out, it didn’t. Now in the winter it is not moisturizing enough on its own and it does get a little tacky for a moment, but when I layer my moisturizers on it’s perfect)

Moisturizers:
Rival de Loop hydrating gel cream for eyes (better than the Chanel sample I used for a couple of months)
Garnier 24h moisturizer anti blemishes  (has a slightly powdery finish, is really light on the skin, contains salycylic acid and sits nicely under make up)
Diadermine  Lift intense + SPF 30 (especially in the summer and on sunny days)N
Diadermine Lift intense + Nutritive Night (best night cream I tried so far because it doesn’t leave any residue and sinks in quickly but hydrates and repairs virtually just as well as other nightcreams I tried so far)

Wipes:
bebe young care cleansing wipes for dry and sensitive skin (I use those in a pinch or when I don’t have make up on and need a quick refresh. It was these wipes though that made me realize that it was actually whatever component it is that is in the bebe young care line that cleans up my white bumps)

Lipcare:
After weeks of having a dry patch on my top lip that just wouldn’t go away and nothing helped I used the brand again that I was certain would not help but it did. My lips are back to normal now , though and I am back to not needing any lip balms all thanks to my ancient Labello Gold and Labello Hydro Care. Everything else may well go to the trash.

You will notice that all of this is drugstore. I simply don’t have the budget to fork out on expensive brands, plus this routine works really well for me, at this point I see no need to change anything.

Decorative Cosmetics:

Base:
The two bases that stood out to me this year were my MAC Face and Body in C1 (still can’t get over how awesome my skin looks in the pics that I took when I wore it) and Max Factor Facefinity in 40 Fresh Ivory. The Facefinity is a special favorite because it makes my skin look incredible and lasts forever. I even wear it to work and despite physical exertion it does not budge. Plus the color is a perfect match. If I could only wear two foundations for the rest of my life it would be those two.

Eyeshadowbase:
After the desaster of the essence I ❤ stage base I was glad I got the Urban Decay Primer Potion samples with my Naked 2 palette. So far I have only used Eden and at this point I would totally shell out the 20€ to get the full size once I have used up the samples. I have been using it since August and there is still a lot left. It is light enough for me and I love the coverage it gives in my eyelids plus it really makes my shadows last between 8 and 10 hrs.

Brows:
This year was a brow year and I am not done yet. My new finds were the Catrice brow wax and the tinted brow filler. If I really want my brows to be extremely polished I go for wax, then powder then filler. Normally I use either wax or filler with the Catrice brow powder. I also moved on to fill in the front of my brows with the lighter and the tail with the darker color of the powder duo. I found a shape I like, I trim rather than pluck and my brows are so much fuller and nicer since I started doing that. For 2015 I want to find a place in town to get my brows threaded or waxed because at this point I am struggeling with removing the fuzz over and under my brow and I want to try either the Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade or the MAC Liquidline for brows (IF i can still find that anywhere)

Eyeshadows:
With the arrival of Jaclyn Hill and Casey Holmes in my life I completely revamped the way I do my eye make up. Generally I have been gravitating towards neutral eyes this year and my Urban Decay Naked 2 palette as well as the Sleek Au Naturel palette. The top row of the Sleek palette has incredible transition/crease shades and I don’t think I have to say anything about the Naked 2 anymore. All has been said. It’s perfect.
The single shadows that blew me out of the water this year are both from Catrice. There was Shade of Grey from the Lala Berlin collection, which looks like a metallic shadow in the pan on the lid however it has the most incredible matte but lit from within/softly shimmery finish. I have never seen anything like this before and it is perfect to me. The other one is Go Charlie Brown from the regular range, which is the perfect matte medium brown for the crease.

Eyeliner:
I am a liquid liner gal and the Manhattan Eyemazing liner has been with me for most of the year. I just feel naked without my liner. The Eyemazing liner is really good for a pen and lasted really long without drying in or the tip going blunt. However, I am currently trying another one though, which seems to blow the Eyemazing liner out of the water. We’ll see.
I rarely ever use liner on my lower waterline anymore, especially not black. It just doesn’t work for me anymore unless I am doing a heavy duty smoky eye. At best it looks like trying too hard at worst it looks completely inappropriate.

Mascara:
My realization of the year is that I am a L’Oréal mascara girl. My favorite is the Miss Manga mascara and I can’t wait to try the Black Angel variety once I have used up my other mascaras. My second favorite this year was the original Volume Million Lashes. Aside from the Catrice Doll Eyes Waterproof I think I have sworn off other mascaras for good. L’Oréal or bust.

Setting Powder:
essence All about matt. Best one I have tried so far. I still have the loose version in my back up drawer (which is gonna last me forever). It’s translucent, finely milled and does what it says on the tin.

Blush:
Because of my freckles there is a lot going on on my skin as is, so overly shimmery blushes are per se not such a good idea for me. For most of the year I stuck with the utterly fantastic MAC Perfect Cheek blush which is indeed perfect: A neutral light pink almost a bit grey which turns into the lightest most natural flush on my fair skin. Towards the end of the year another favorite came in the Catrice Floral OrnARTment blush from the Viennart collection which is a matte light peach with deep reddish elements. The reddish elements I try to avoid for everyday blush because they can come out a little strong against my skin. A shimmery one that I loved was the Hello Autumn color changing blush by essence. The shimmer in this one is light and fine enough for me to get away with it.

Bronzer:
My two bronzers of the year are my MAC Aphrodite’s Shell which is my perfect bronzer, considering how light and sheer it is. It gives me the perfect sunkissed color. The other one is the Catrice Metallure Bronzer. With a light hand I can avoid shimmery desasters and instead get a soft glowy flush.

Haircare:
The only thing that stood out to me this year was the Garnier Natural Beauty Cranberry and Argan Oil conditioner. It smells amazing and does the perfect job at keeping my hair healthy, shiny and soft. I think I’m on my second or third bottle right now.

And that’s a wrap on the Beauty Awards 2014. No lip products? No lip products! While there were a couple of nice ones there were none that really stood out to me enough that I wore them more than a couple of times.
I am thinking about doing a Life Awards 2014 next. We’ll see how that goes.

Sunday Round Up #29 With A Side of Up Close and Personal

This was about the hardest week I had to endure in a long time.
I hate it when things are out of my control and I have to have faith in other people. This week I had to trust people to get the documents for my Master application ready and of course there was a shitload of drama involved. I’m not going to go into detail because it’s pretty pointless, suffice it to say that I got everything I needed but I had to put up big fight. If someone tries to tell you Germany is organized and punctual and shit; No we are not, especially not the authorities. Absolute disgrace for a reasonably developed country, just saying.

Either way I survived. And a lot better than I thought I would. I managed to stay positive throughout the whole week. I did have a panic moment on thursday (because of course everything accumulated on friday), but I did something about it by writing an e-mail and making a plan how I would tackle friday. Staying organized always helps me. It was a brief moment and didn’t  paralyze me for long like it used to. I managed to find ways to treat myself right and take the edge off the pressure. Working out helped but I have to say when the stress hit me hardest I skipped two days because I just didn’t have the time or the energy to do it. I allowed myself yolo food, stressfree reading, a wee bit of shopping and some light weight tv-watching (more on that further down). The insomnia didn’t hit me all that hard. I fell asleep relatively easily throughout the week. It may have helped that I worked 4 out of five days. Long story short, I found a way to treat myself right without completely falling apart and over-compensating. I drew a lot of strength from little happy things like my colleague saving me a chips container to put away so I had something ‘easy’ to do after the mildly annoying drugstore container I had to put away, my boss complaining about the drugstore aisle but being stopped short when my other boss told him it couldn’t have been a recent mess up because little old me worked the drugstore aisle this week. You know, the little stuff. And looking forward to hanging out with my bestie on saturday really helped.

So here’s to a mini Sunday Round Up:

Make up-wise my skin was finally healthy enough again for me to go back to MAC Face&Body. I had major hormonal break outs and cystic acne induced by the Nivea Protect and Bronze face cream that I talked about earlier, not gonna wear that again then. Instead I went back to my trusted Diadermine Lift+SPF cream, in fact I had to buy a new pot this week. I just love that stuff. BTW my face still tans despite the SPF 30 but it doesn’t burn.
I also got my first Real Techniques brushes, as they were sold at my local TK Maxx. I got the travel essentials set with the essential foundation, domed shadow and multitask brush. I have used them all already and they are SO good. Even the essential foundation even though I am usually not a fan of flat foundation brushes. I think I won’t use it for foundation but for concealer and eye primer. The domed shadow brush is denser than any brush I own and I am still playing with it, but I really like it so far.

Media-wise I finished City of Lost Souls yesterday and yep, I still like it. The book got me safely through the week. It is not particularly deep or demanding and therefore a really nice companion for a stressed mind like mine. I am currently reading J.R.Ward’s Lover Mine part one (book 8 in the series). I accidentally started to read that before reading book 7 and I didn’t even notice. So much for the quality of that series. It is rather entertaining though and I’ve gotten that far so I might just continue reading.
I marathoned Mistresses and really liked it. It is a show with Alyssa Milano whom I really like, lovely Lost lady Yunjin Kim and a dear old friend, Brett Tucker aka Dave Brewer of McLeod’s Daughters fame. The cast is great in this show, the storylines are somewhat predictable but still entertaining. To be honest for me it is really the cast and characters that make the show not so much the storylines. Other than that I started Suits last night and it may grow on me.+
Music-wise I am really in love with my black album by Metallica. The older I get the more I fall for Metallica, especially the old stuff is great.

Anything else? I think that was it.

I hope your week was not as stressful as mine and let’s hope I can finally manage to get a new rhythm to my days and get stuff figured out. Everything is moving at the moment and I have a little trouble to get a routine down, and we all know, not having routines makes me antsy. On thursday I have another appointment with my professor about the thesis and they are usually really inspiring and motivating.
Let’s all go into this new week with a positive attitude, don’t let anything strike you down, we got this!

Read you soon!

(Oh, I will add a pic later so that it’s not such a dry read.)

Haul and First Impressions: MAC Face and Body and more…

Photo 21-05-2014 13 41 10I hinted at it in my recent Sunday Round Ups but yeah, I have put two hellish months behind me and it seems I did well. Off I went to treat myself. Initially I didn’t want to splurge but that 10% off- Douglas Card offer vaulted me over the edge (that and the packaging for the Alluring Aquatics by MAC, I mean, O. M. G. … !!!)

I actually went in to get matched for the MAC Face and Body foundation. Recently my skin has been really great and I was craving a lightweight sheer foundation to get me over the summer and I knew MAC F&B would deliver and on top I knew from reviews that it also lasts very well on the skin. If that doesn’t scream summer I don’t know what does!
I got matched to C1, which is the lightest of the bunch. The Maccine tried N2 and N1 on me, but N2 was too dark and N1 came out too dark and yellow as well (weirdly enough). C1 pretty much hit the nail on the head, though. Generally I have to say I had a great experience at our MAC counter today, she even took me outside so I could look at my face in daylight and she was very nice and helpful.

And then Alluring Aquatic happened. I am a little upset that I didn’t get a lipstick anymore because they were all sold out already but I just HAD to get one thing from the collection because the packaging is the most stunning I have ever seen. Ever. I might actually go back tomorrow and pick one of the nailpolishes up as well (naughty). I was torn between one of the Extra Dimension blushes and one of the Extra Dimension bronzers and after my lovely Maccine swatched both on me I fell for the bronzer. Hard. So in the end and enabled by the 10% off I took it home with me.

Look at the packaging with the droplets on it. Look. At. It. Oooooh!

And here’s to the first impressions:

Naked Face

In this picture you can see my bare skin. It is very hot over here today and I am very hormonal, so please do excuse the spots and the redness. I primed my skin by applying the Rival de Loop Hydro Moisturizing Gel, which I also hauled today. I used it underneath my Diadermine day cream because my skin was a bit sore after being cleansed three times in less than 6 hours (morning cleanse, cleansing wipe at MAC and taking the dirt of the city off before applying the new foundation -.-). The gel contains panthenol and duo-hyaluron and it soothed my skin immediately. It is very lightweight and sank in very quickly but it still felt really moisturizing. It also seemed to let my skin absorb my moisturizer better and quicker, I really enjoy it so far.
I also tried the soothing eye cream from the same range because I ran out of my Chanel Hydra Beauty eye gel- sample and I actually think I like the RdL eye cream better. It is even more moisturizing and a little creamier then the Chanel gel (it’s still a gel/cream formula just like the Chanel, though).

Just Face and Body

You can actually see how the foundation calmed down the redness and evened out my skintone already. I buffed the foundation on with a flat top synthetic kabuki brush. F&B is waterbased, which means it is very liquidy when it comes out of the bottle, but it sets very quickly. It even feels a little bit sticky for a second or two, but really for just that long. On its own the foundation has a very glowy finish without being oily or moving around a lot and it is pretty much undetectable on the skin. It melted into my skin and set and it hasn’t budged until now, despite the hot sultry weather we have today. Granted at this point I only had it on for about 5 hours but I also ran around in the heat already and got sweaty and everything is still in place.

Face and Body and concealer

Face and Body and concealer

I used the Rimmel Match Perfection concealer under my eyes and around my nose and the Catrice Camouflage on any spots (both in 010 Ivory). The concealers melted very nicely into the foundation. Another major point pro Face and Body: I suffer from enlarged pores mainly on my nose (ick-factor right there, sorry) and the F&B blurrs over the pores without sitting in them or otherwise highlighting them. That was my major concern, that it wouldn’t cover my pores well enough but it did.

F&B, concealer, powder

F&B, concealer, powder

I lightly powdered with my essence all about matt powder and a duofiber stipling brush. It didn’t stay matte for long, BUT I also didn’t get overly oily. The foundation just went back to being glowy and skin-like.

Photo 21-05-2014 14 08 42

And here is the final look with MAC Alluring Aquatic Extra Dimension Bronzer Aphrodite’s Shell on my cheeks, Max Factor Masterpiece Glide On Liner in black/brown in a half-line and L’Oréal Miss Manga in black on my lashes. I filled in my brows with the Catrice Brow Set.

Aphrodite’s Shell only got a C on Temptalia but mainly because it is such a sheer veil and won’t show up on medium to darker complexions, but on me as the extremely fair dainty doll that I am this bronzer is borderline perfect. It gives me a wash of sunkissed color, melts into my skin and gives almost like a soft focus effect. It doesn’t show up very well on pictures, though. In reality I have this very soft bronzey glow on my cheeks, but my camera won’t cooperate. It looks like I have some splotch of brown color on my cheek, oh well….

To sum this up I am in love with all of my purchases today! It seems I had the Midas touch with all of the things I bought. Keep in mind that this is a first impression not a proper review and a bit of a rave at that. I will keep on wearing everything and see what happens. So far no MAC foundation has broken me out and I sincerely hope it stays that way, same goes for the skin care.
If you are looking for a review of that green polish check back on sisterhoodofthetravellingnailpolish.wordpress.com in the next couple of days, I will get one up there soon.

Do you have any experience with MAC F&B or MAC in general? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Read y’all on Sunday, have a good one 🙂
